Neural Fields, Masses and Bayesian Modelling

چکیده
This chapter considers the relationship between neural field and mass models and their application to modelling empirical data. Specifically, we consider neural masses as a special case of neural fields, when conduction times tend to zero and focus on two exemplar models of cortical microcircuitry; namely, the Jansen-Rit and the Canonical Microcircuit Model. Both models incorporate parameters pertaining to important neurobiological attributes, such as synaptic rate constants and the extent of lateral connections. We describe these models and show how Bayesian inference can be used to assess the validity of their field and mass variants, given empirical data. Interestingly, we find greater evidence for neural field variants in analyses of LFP data but fail to find more evidence for such variants, relative to their neural mass counterparts, in MEG (virtual electrode) data. The key distinction between these data is that LFP data are sensitive to a wide range of spatial frequencies and the temporal fluctuations that these frequencies contain. In contrast, the lead fields, inherent in non-invasive electromagnetic recordings, are necessarily broader and suppress temporal dynamics that are expressed in high spatial frequencies. We present this as an example of how neuronal field and mass models (hypotheses) can be compared formally. Acknowledgments This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust.

Image compression is one of the important research fields in image processing. Up to now, different methods are presented for image compression. Neural network is one of these methods that has represented its good performance in many applications. The usual method in training of neural networks is error back propagation method that its drawbacks are late convergence and stopping in points of lo...

متن کاملNon-linear Bayesian Image Modelling
In recent years several techniques have been proposed for modelling the low-dimensional manifolds, or ‘subspaces’, of natural images. Examples include principal component analysis (as used for instance in ‘eigen-faces’), independent component analysis, and auto-encoder neural networks. Such methods suffer from a number of restrictions such as the limitation to linear manifolds or the absence of...
متن کاملForecasting with artificial neural network models
This paper contains a forecasting exercise on 30 time series, ranging on several fields, from economy to ecology. The statistical approach to artificial neural networks modelling developed by the author is compared to linear modelling and to other three well-known neural network modelling procedures: Information Criterion Pruning (ICP), Cross-Validation Pruning (CVP) and Bayesian Regularization...
متن کاملEstimation of Products Final Price Using Bayesian Analysis Generalized Poisson Model and Artificial Neural Networks
Estimating the final price of products is of great importance. For manufacturing companies proposing a final price is only possible after the design process over. These companies propose an approximate initial price of the required products to the customers for which some of time and money is required. Here using the existing data of already designed transformers and utilizing the bayesian anal...
